Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death; and they bound Him and led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate the governor. Matthew 27:1-2
Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate. Mark 15:1
When it was day, the Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their council chamber, saying, “IF You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe; and if I ask a question, you will not answer. But from not on the Son of Man will be seated a the right hand of the power seat of God.” And they all said, “Are you the Son of God, then?” And He said to them, “yes, I am.” Then they said, “What further need to we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.” Luke 22:66
Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium , and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. John 18:28
Why a Good Friday Sunrise Service?
You’ll notice from the passages above that all four of the gospels note the time of day in chronicling the events of Good Friday. I think it’s noteworthy that our Savior did not enjoy a peaceful night of rest prior to his grueling execution. No the agony started the night before and continued through the morning until his death in the afternoon.
Why a Men’s Only Event?
I note that those who were around Jesus at this point in the story were presumably all men, chief priests, elders, scribes. These were the men who were so threatened by Christ that they wanted Him dead. Does this mean there were no women nearby… certainly not as a matter of fact, I can point to a couple of scriptures that indicate there were women at least within earshot. But, it appears to me that the inner circle were men. So, when we have our ‘hands-on’ Good Friday Sunrise event, we invite only men. But there’s another factor as well –
The truth is, men behave differently when women are present. Sometimes better sometimes worse, but definitely differently. And, although I’m sure some would disagree with me, I think there are times when men need to wrestle with spiritual issues and life issues as men with men. The Good Friday Sunrise Service is one of those experiences that men need to have in the presence of other men.
So, with that explanation, men, would plan to join us at one of the locations for our Good Friday Sunrise service? Ladies, would you encourage your man to participate?
