Jesus: Our Model for Manhood

Good morning men. I think it’s important for us to go make frequent trips back to the core issues upon which this ministry is based. This week, I want to focus on Jesus as our model for manhood. I want to frame our discussion with the following in mind….

Last week, on the editorial page of the Richmond Times Dispatch, I read an editorial titled Society: Shockoe Safety. I don’t want to rehash the whole thing but generally the editor was reviewing the challenges and potential solutions related to the city’s efforts to maintain a safe environment in the Shockoe Bottom area. Here’s a great quote: The real problem in Shockoe Bottom…. Is, as Chief Norwood put it, “the way people behave.” Followed by this: A long-term strategy entails a wide range of issues as complex a reorienting young men’s codes of honor and integrity away from the culture of shame and toward the culture of guilt. I think the editor is right on track! We won’t see real lasting change in social behavior without “reorienting” “young men’s codes of honor and integrity”.

Perhaps the most significant challenge we face in our society is helping boys find their way to authentic manhood. Today could I challenge you to pray for the boys you know who lack a compelling vision for what a man really should be?
