Joseph: A Great Example for Dads

Good morning men. This is the week leading up to Father’s Day. I’m pretty excited about the opportunity I have to share a Father’s Day message at Ironbridge Baptist Church this Sunday. As I began to pray and prepare for this opportunity, God brought to mind a short video that Stephen Kendrick posted on the Fireproof website just before Christmas. He talked about how Joseph, Jesus’ earthly father, was a great example for all of us dads. I’ve done some research, and honestly, I’m blown away by the things I’ve learned about fathering from Joseph. I’m going to share some insights with you this week and will really expand the ideas with the folks at Ironbridge this Sunday.

First of all, Joseph is no small player in Jesus’ life. Obviously we know God doesn’t do anything by chance. He knew what he was doing when he established Joseph as Jesus’ earthly father. As a matter of fact, although Jesus was not of Joseph’s own loins, Jesus genealogy through Joseph’s family is included in both Matthew and Luke’s gospel. The book of Matthew is written primarily to a Jewish audience and they would have been interested in Jesus lineage from Abraham through David. Luke’s gospel was written to the Gentiles, they would have been interested in Jesus’ as the savior of all people so Luke’s account goes all the way back to Adam.

Men, I will challenge you to give thanks to God for providing a savior for us all through Jesus Christ! That’s your challenge for today.
