Joseph: A Righteous Man

Good morning men. This week we’re talking about the example of fathering that Joseph, the father of Jesus set for each of us. Let’s look at Matthew one: nineteen “Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly”.

I think we should start with the obvious here. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man. It doesn’t get much plainer in God’s word… Joseph was a righteous man. The man God chose to serve as the earthly father of his only son was a righteous man. Now what exactly does that mean? I think it’s clear that Joseph had a previous relationship with God. I think Joseph was an upright man who sought to live out his faith in the way he interacted with others, in the way he did his carpentry work, in the way he conducted business.

Although we don’t know for sure, I think it’s safe to assume that Joseph did his best to live according to the Law of Moses. I think he probably was a regular worshiper. I bet he prayed. I bet he gave offerings. Joseph was no stranger to the Lord and the Lord was not a stranger to him. So men, I wonder… God chose a righteous man to serve as the father of Jesus. Has he chosen a righteous man to serve as the father of your children? Would a story that included you as a character proclaim you to be a righteous man? I want to challenge you to ponder these questions today.
