Beyond BetterMan

By Mike Young | Noble Warriors

I’m a HUGE fan of BetterMan! It is one of the resources I recommend frequently and fervently to leaders looking for a strong men’s discipleship launch point. BetterMan can be part of a robust men’s discipleship strategy in and through the local church.

WHAT IS BETTERMAN?

BetterMan is a video-driven study that helps establish both a sure foundation of biblical manhood with your men AND facilitates small group engagement among your men. Connecting men around the Word of God is key to spiritual formation of men.

BetterMan is engaging for men of all ages. It offers great insights for young men who are starting their journey as well as seasoned men who are miles down the road. As a matter of fact, I don’t know of a single guy at any age who doesn’t want to be a “better man.”

Let me share two examples how BetterMan has been at work in Virginia.

BetterMan through Valor Ministry

Valor is a Cru Ministry at Virgina Tech that works specifically to reach future military officers who are part of the Corps of Cadets. In the spring of 2021, a young Cadet knowledgeable about BetterMan, asked a seasoned man to help him lead a group of cadets through the material. The experience had huge impact on about a dozen young men. Noble Warriors offered to provide participants guides each year if seniors would engage BetterMan. So, for five years now, we’ve received a request for BetterMan guides to help lay a foundation for biblical manhood for future young officers!

BetterMan at Bethel Baptist

Often churches reach out and ask for a starting point for men’s discipleship. I talk about long-term strategy with them, and establish a goal to help every man connect with other godly men. We talk about prayerfully recruiting and training a leadership team, then walk them through a tool like BetterMan before inviting other men in the church to engage. It works! It’s exciting to see God work through a committed leader (we call him our Champion for Men!) to grow a leadership team and launch strategic men’s discipleship!

That’s what happened at Bethel Baptist Church in Yorktown. God called Kelley Miles to step up as the champion for men. He prayerfully recruited a team. They experienced BetterMan together then offered it to the church! They had nearly 50 men experience BetterMan through multiple group offerings.

BETTER MAN… NOW WHAT’S THE PLAN?

Here’s an email question from Kelley and my response:

Heya Mike,

Our initial BetterMan groups are nearing the end of the Defined Series, and you had mentioned that you had some ideas for a follow up study. Could you share those with me?

Thanks,

Kelley

______________

Hi Kelley,

Thanks for reaching out. Yes, great question.

My caution is to be careful that you don’t move from one video study to the next. Guys get addicted to video studies. My goal is to always move guys toward engaging the Word. So a couple of thoughts…

  1. Point Man – You may have done this already, but if guys haven’t been through Point Man this is a great next step.
  2. Seasons of a Leader’s Life by Jeff Iorg – It’s a book about how Jesus trained Peter for leadership. I went through it with my sons and some other guys. There are great conversation prompts as you study each passage where Peter is mentioned in the NT.
  3. Study the book of James. I love the book of James for men. It’s fairly brief, loaded with practical content that every guy can related to, and a great starting point for guys who don’t typically engage the Word well. The Master Builder’s Bible for Men is a great asset here.
  4. It’s also fine to move to BetterMan defined. I would just try to mix it up with an eye toward moving beyond videos.
  5. Some of your men will say, “Well what I want is a deep Bible study in a book like Romans.” That’s awesome but the great commission calls us to make disciples, not do deep Bible study. So, if some of your guys say, “I want something more challenging.” tell them to go find two to three men and start discipling them to become men of the Word, Christ-like husbands, and godly fathers.

We love BetterMan, but we love strategy even more! BetterMan can be part of a larger strategy to help mobilize and equip men to walk with Christ and lead well. Check out BetterMan.com to learn more about this great resource that can be part of your strategic plan to help men walk with Christ and lead well.

**Chris Harper, CEO of BetterMan, will be a keynote speaker at the Noble Warriors Men’s Conference in Richmond, VA  on Saturday, March 21.
