The Morning of Good Friday

Many of us will attend or at least hear of Easter Sunrise services this weekend. It is delightful to gather with other Christ followers early on Resurrection Day to celebrate Jesus’ finished work on the cross. These gatherings are a highlight of the year.

But, I’m also drawn to the idea of solemn assembly and contemplative moments on Good Friday morning.

Did you know that each of the gospel writers specifically notes the morning of crucifixion day?

(Check out the Bible references at the bottom.)

On Easter we gather at sunrise to celebrate the Jesus’ victory.

On Good Friday, we gather at sunrise to remember the cost of the cross.

Would you take a little time today to reflect on the events of the day? Be reminded that Jesus endured the trials, the scourging and the cross for us. He completed His assignment so that we might enjoy the assurance of eternity with Him. He was in agony, but He looked beyond the cross to the joy of our Salvation.

Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2 ESV

  • When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.  Matthew 27:1
  • And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate. Mark 15:1
  • When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their council, and they said, “if you are the Christ, tell us.” Luke 22:66-67a
  • Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. John 18:28
