My Imprisonment is for Christ

Minute with Mike / May 2019

Recently, my son, Tim, spent time reading and memorizing parts of Philippians as spiritual preparation for Ranger School. So, I read, listened and prayed through Philippians frequently as I prayed for him.

One verse that captured my attention and consumed much pondering time was this… it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. Philippians 1:13

Read the full section, Philippians 1:12-18, and consider that Paul was in prison. The situation and condition were surely less than desirable. Yet, everyone around him, even his captors, clearly understood that he was a Christ follower. And not just a quiet follower of Jesus but a bold and vocal herald of the gospel.

The way he carried himself in this difficult situation inspired others to be bold in their faith!

I find this personally convicting. I’ve faced more challenges than usual of late, and too often, I hear myself complaining. Sometimes (but not always) I’m reminded of Paul’s example and pray for courage to live in such a way that even my challenges and difficulties will point others to Jesus.

Men, what would happen in your family (and mine) if Jesus was honored and proclaimed even more so in the hard moments?

Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world. Philippians 2:14-15

  • Pray for wisdom and courage to represent Christ well in difficulties.
