Why should you mentor?
Mentoring a young man can be life-changing for all involved. By welcoming and guiding a young boy/man, you can fill a void that may have been created by absent fathers and offer crucial support and encouragement. Studies show young men growing up without a father are more likely to face challenges such as lower academic achievement, behavioral problems, and increased risk of criminal activity. Mentoring helps provide the stability and positive role models they desperately need. Remember, as Mark 9:37 says, when you welcome a child in Jesus’ name, you welcome Him. At Noble Warriors, we know mentoring can change the game for the next generation of young men. It’s more than just passing on advice; it’s about building solid relationships that help both the mentor and the mentee grow in faith and life.
Tim Brown, our Director of Operations, will be leading a workshop in late August 2024 for a group of men working for an overseas ministry. He found inspiration in Truett Cathy’s book, It’s Better to Build Boys than Mend Men, with insights pulled from Proverbs 22, offering timeless guidance for shaping young men.
Key Lessons:
- A Good Name – Having a good name and being esteemed is more valuable than riches. Your integrity, trustworthiness, and legacy matter big time, as highlighted in Proverbs 22:1. This is the solid column that supports your character.
- Respect – Early education, role modeling, and understanding consequences are key. As Galatians 6:7 reminds us, you reap what you sow, so teaching respect early on pays off in the long run. This respect is the beam that supports strong relationships.
- Trust – Trust is the foundation of any strong relationship. Proverbs 22:19 underscores the importance of teaching trust in the Lord. Trust acts like the bolts that hold everything firmly together.
- Common Sense – Practical wisdom and prudence go a long way. Proverbs 22:3 emphasizes being cautious and taking refuge from danger. This is the screw that ensures everything is securely fastened and well-constructed.
- The Right Crowd – Surround yourself with positive influences and avoid the negative ones. Peer pressure can be tough, but with the right role models, mentees can learn to recognize and resist it, as Proverbs 22:24-25 advises. Choosing the right crowd is like selecting the best materials for your structure, ensuring it stands strong.
- Stability – A stable environment is crucial for growth. Consistency, discipline, and support make all the difference. Proverbs 22:10 talks about driving out strife to create a peaceful environment. Stability is the foundation and the bedrock on which everything else is built.
